What's KAMA SUTRA About?!
KAMA SUTRA is a very
clever, comical sexual adventure. In the play we meet
Tristan & Pamela; a happily married couple hitting middle age who
have settled into an uneventful existence. Until one day Pamela
stumbles across a copy of the KAMA SUTRA at the library in the
cookery section. (At first she thinks it is an Indian cook book!!!
Many of the pages were stuck together you see!) What follows is a
hysterical romp through her newly found sexual awareness, and
Tristan's resistance to her new sexual revolution. While the play is
admittedly very funny, it is also a cleverly disguised lesson in
compromise, accepting change and growth. Warning: This play has adult subject matter, many terms for genitalia and some middle aged naked bum exposure!
Has this play been produced before?
Playwright Peter Mc Garry
with Eyewitness Theater Company in England first premiered this play
at the 1999 Orlando Fringe Festival and then took it across the
Canadian Fringe circuit that same year. It played to sold out
audiences in Orlando and across Canada. He has also produced it in
England, Ireland and Australia. Peter came across the pond in August
2007 to play Tristan and help Winnie open Dangerous Theatre with its
first production in Denver. Since it is such a fun play, and had
such a short run, Winnie decided to bring it back.
Voted "Best Comedy" at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival

Review recently in the Denver Oyster:
Hey Baby! Know what is really hot for this week? Kama Sutra, an
ancient Indian text widely considered to be the standard work on
love in Sanskrit. It is structured into seven parts, but the
focus is on three aims and priorities of Hindi life, the
acquisition of knowledge, conduct of the well bred and
reflections to assist the lover in romantic enterprises. A
common misconception about the Kama Sutra is that is a
sex-manual or a sacred, religious work. Still, if you pick up
the book at your local bookstore, you will find delightful and
artistic sexual positions, which will put you out of any
missionary position attitudes you, may have. I know YOU don't.
My recent delight was
attending a small theater production of Kama Sutra at Denver's
Dangerous Theatre. You won't want to miss this one. If you have
never experienced the intimacy of a small theater production,
you are in for quite a delectation. With very few props in a
small production, the focus is on the acting, and in this case
the wonderful talents of Winnie Wenglewick as Pamela and Bob
Webb who plays her husband Tristan.
The story centers around a middle aged English housewife who
accidentally finds a copy of the Kama Sutra in the cook book
section at the library. As she explores her sexuality and breaks
free from her long traditional housewife position, we see her
blossom into full womanhood and personal empowerment. The rift
is, she fully expects her traditional missionary position,
uptight and proper husband, Tristan, to accompany her on her
journey of growth and personal enlightenment. As she thrives on
the changes she makes, he is miserable and wants things to
remain the same. His feeble attempts to comply, often
unwillingly, is hilarious and sad at the same time. Their
journey brings them back to themselves and their marriage reaps
the benefits of a deep lasting love that was hidden under the
monotony and pressures of their stifling imposed culture. Eyes
wide open, their love and marriage becomes stronger. It is
absolutely hilarious, genuinely engaging and a must see.
